PROGRAMAÇÃO:
Brazilian genetics health care at the cross-roads
October,Tuesday 15,2013
10:00 – 16:30
Lecture theatre of the Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Centre - Open to entire biosciences institute
It is just 53 years since three eminent founders of human genetics in Brazil jointly announced initiation of diagnostic services (Salzano, Freira-Maia and Frota- Pessoa). But have their expectations been met?
A wide ranging symposium on contentious issues in patient care and research in human genetics in Brazil will consider the
current situation.
Topics will conclude discussions on whether Brazil has the
genetics services it deserves and can pay for, ethics, privacy, the potential or a data over kill of Next generation sequencing, automation of labour intensive diagnostic activities, protection of the patient and researcher’s rights through gene patenting, patient consent, ownership of data, who pays for genetic services, federal and private responsibilities for genetic health care, stem cell therapies – fact or fiction, bio-banking, Human Variome project etc., etc.
We benefit in having two experienced Dutch keynote speakers at the symposium that can provide some comparisons with the Dutch genetic health-care system on aspects such as the trade off between research aims and development and maintenance of a robust genetic service to serve the national needs. The program will consist of individual presentations, titles to be specified later, and the day wrapped up with a round table discussion
