The Department of Botany is committed to the mission of excellence in innovative research and to provide a superior education in many aspects of plant biology and related life sciences. Founded back in 1934, the Department has a long-standing tradition in research and training students, leading the way in diverse areas of plant biology, including systematics and biogeography, plant anatomy and morphology, ecology, biochemistry and molecular biology, among others. The Department is also strongly committed to maintaining academic excellence, offering 28 courses in the Undergraduate Program in Biological Sciences and an outstanding Graduate Program that integrates the state of the art of scientific developments in the different fields and awakens the student curiosity and creativity.
The Department of Botany maintains an excellent infrastructure, including modern laboratories, an external experimental area with greenhouses and gardens for didactic and experimental use, the Herbarium SPF that holds up to 300,000 samples of algae and vascular plants and the Xylotheque “Nanuza Luiza de Menezes” with thousands of wood samples.
The faculty of the Department of Botany is formed by 25 professors and develops ground-breaking research in the following major areas: I) Plant Anatomy, II) Phycology, III) Plant Developmental Biology, IV) Integrative Plant Biology, V) Phytochemistry, VI) Plant Regulatory Networks, VII) Systematics and Biogeography and VIII) Teaching in Botany.
